How to install Windows 7 Themes

This will be a guide how to install Windows 7 themes properly. You can install themepacks created on Windows 7 by double-clicking on it, but for 3rd party themes you will have to patch your uxtheme.dll and some other dll files first.

Overview

Installing custom Windows 7 themes can be more difficult than you think. This is a comprehensive guide that will teach you what you have to do.

If this tutorial is too difficult for you or simply can’t install Windows 7 themes after following each and every step, you should simply download one of our custom Windows 7 themes. ALL of them can be installed with a simple double-click!

To install themes you first have to follow Method 1 or Method 2. This is NOT optional.

Installing .Themepack Themes vs. Installing Unsigned Themes

Before we start, answer this question:
Do you want to install a theme that has the file extension .themepack or is it a complex shell theme that actually changes the appearance of your operating system and has the file extension .theme and usually comes with a whole folder of files?
If the answer is that it is a .themepack theme, you can install the theme with a simple double-click. If it’s not, then proceed with the next step.

Before installing 3rd-party themes: Create a backup

Microsoft does not allow you to use themes that modify the shell of Windows 7 or other parts like the Start orb or the taskbar. In order to install those themes you will have to patch your uxtheme.dll, themeui.dll and themeservice.dll, which can be found “C:\Windows\system32\”.
Before you try to install any themes please make a backup of those files!! I won’t repeat this and you are doing any changes at your own risk, I don’t take any responsibility.

Method 1: Universal Theme Patcher

Alternatively, you can download the Universal Theme Patcher created by deepxw that works with Windows XP SP2 SP3/2003/2008/Vista SP1 SP2/Windows 7, 32bit(x86)/64bit(x64). This won’t create another background process, instead it will patch your files.

This patcher will automatically patch the following files on Windows 7: uxtheme.dll, themeui.dll, themeservice.dll

In order to patch the files, you will to run this with administrator privileges. To provide admin rights, right-click on the file and select “Run as administrator”:

The tool will automatically create a backup of the file, so it’s totally safe, because you can always restore the original file:

One last step: To install 3rd party themes, you have to copy the complete folder to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes

Method 2: Background Service UXStyle Core

The first and probably easiest way to install Windows 7 themes is to use the UXStyle Core tool (created by Rafael withinwindows.com).
The UXStyle Core tool can downloaded from http://uxstyle.com/ or from our own server: Download UXStyle Core
This tool will create a new process “UnsignedThemesSvc.exe” that is running in the background and will allow you to run 3rd-party themes properly.
After rebooting your PC, you should check if the service “Unisgned Themes” is started. To do that follow a few instructions:
1. Click on Start
2. Enter services.msc into the search field
3. Enter “U” and look for the service “Unsigned Themes”
4. Double-click it and click on “Start”
5. If it could not find the specified file, you should download

One last step: To install 3rd party themes, you have to copy the complete folder to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes

Troubleshooting Unsigned Themes service

Error:
Windows could not start the Unsigned Themes service on local computer.
Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.
Fix:
Download Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package

Sidenote: Before you use the UXStyle Core, you should deinstall any previously installed UXTheme.dll patches. The UXStyle Core is working on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.
If you have problems installing unsigned themes after installing UXStyle Core, check if the service is started: Enter “sc start UnsignedThemes” into command line or follow the instructions above.
Reboot your PC after installing UXStyle Core!

Where should I copy my themes to?

To install your 3rd-party themes you have to copy your themes to the folder C:\Windows\Resources\Themes
Let’s take a peek at that folder to understand how it works:

The themes folder has some .theme files but also a folder called “Aero”. This folder is part of the Aero theme (aero.theme). The folder MUST have the exact name of the .theme file (in this case Aero). The folder name is case-insensitive.
Now let’s take a peek at a typical 3rd-party theme:

A folder and a .theme file! For now, it doesn’t really matter what is in that folder. Now, when you extract the folder and .theme file you have to make sure that you are not creating a subfolder for the theme, it has to be exactly like above! If the folder Midnight and Midnight.theme are in a subfolder your theme won’t be recognized.

What should I do with shell32.dll, explorer.exe and other system files?

Many themes will include system files that you have to replace, e.g. explorer.exe, shell32.dll or other system files. You have to replace them to fully install your themes.
Be advised that modifying system files can render your system unusable! Always be VERY careful when you replace system files.

Update 8/8/2010:

Universal Theme Patcher(Windows XP/Vista/7)

Description

Most of us wants to change the oulook of our Windows in many methods.And the 1st thing we need to do is changing our default theme to custom gorgeous 3rd party theme.But Windows don't allow 3rd party themes to be used by default and you'll need to patch following 3 system files to be able to use 3rd party themes in Windows:

1. Install AVI ReComp yg sudah ada download.  ( Sesuaikan dengan kebutuhan anda / Jika bingung apa saja yg harus di install, pilih saja semua Item yg terpilih..)

2. Buka aplikasi AVI ReComp.

Klik OPEN AVI

( pada checkbox Auto-set output patch jika diklik maka akan langsung terbentuk nama Output File nya.. )
Pada bagian New AVI Size jika anda tidak menginginkan perubahan dari Size File video anda maka biarkan saja dengan default value yg ada. Tp jika ingin di rubah maka silahkan tentukan besar kecil nya per MB.


Lanjut ke TAB selanjutnya

3. pada Tab Additions di sinilah letak di mana Anda harus meletakan Subtitle anda.
Pada bagian SUBTITLES jika anda ingin langsung memilih secara manual di mana letak subtitle nya langsung saja klik ENABLE lalu tekan tombol LOAD SUBTITLE.
Jika ada ingin menggunakan AUTO-LOAD ( Tanda harus memilih di mana letak nya ) maka yg perlu di perhatikan Nama File Video dengan nama File Subtitle nya harus sama.. seperti pada contoh di bawah ini .

4. Tahap selanjut nya adalah Tab SETTING. pada TAB ini silahkan disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan ada.

5. Ini adalah Tahap yg terakhir..  Jika file video sudah siap maka klik ADD TO QUEUE.

(Jika anda ingin menambahkan lebih dari 1 file maka setelah File Video sebelumnya masuk ke JOB LIST, kembali lagi ke Tab Source & Output, lalu lakukan kembali dari tahap awal.)

Dan setelah semua file siap untuk di konversi maka terakhir klik tombol START

Preface

The entire purpose of Practical Hacking Techniques and Countermeasures is to give readers the opportunity to actually put their hands on the tools and techniques commonly used by today’s hackers and to actually learn how they work. Up to this point, most security-related books have dealt mainly with the theory and lecture of tools and techniques, but I wanted to provide more. With the use of virtual computers the reader can concentrate on the tools instead of the question of legality. As a former college department chair I saw firsthand how students responded to hands-on security versus lecture only. By providing my students with a series of labs structured around security, hacking techniques, and countermeasures the students gained an invaluable insight as to how to secure today’s computers and associated networks. This is evident by these students being placed at the Pentagon, in our armed forces, as government contractors, and even independent security consultants. I truly believe that when a security professional understands the actual techniques, he or she can provide a better service to the public. Fifteen years ago the standard for security was “security by obscurity,” in
other words, “You don’t know I have a network therefore I’m safe.” With the advent of the Internet this quickly changed. However, even today there are those who when questioned about their security practices respond with “Hey, we’re not a bank” or “I don’t have anything worth stealing.” These people are only delaying the inevitable reality that eventually someone of ill-repute will find their computers or even their networks and take full advantage of them if they haven’t already. Practical Hacking Techniques and Countermeasures is designed as a lab manual. I want every reader to be able to duplicate each lab in this book, which is why I insisted that the inclusion of the CD containing the exact same versions of the tools be used to create this book. This is the first book in a series of books designed to educate security professionals or anyone with an interest in how hacking techniques are conducted, and what countermeasures are available. Hundreds of screenshots are included, which duplicate each lab and are easy to follow. It was also important for me to create Practical Hacking Techniques and Countermeasures from the ground-up perspective. As you progress through the book the techniques and tools become progressively more advanced and follow the standard methodology of how an attacker would approach your own network or computer. I also designed Practical Hacking Techniques and Countermeasures to use the exact same tools used by today’s hacker. This is by no means a conclusive list because tools are added or become obsolete all the time, however, I have provided an excellent foundation for every reader to practice his or her security skills and the reality is most tools used by hackers are either open source (free), custom written (programmer), stolen (warez), or a combination of all three. Dari Abdullah bin ’Amr bahwa Rasulullah SAW bersabda: ”Ilmu itu ada 3 macam. Selain yang 3 itu adalah tambahan. Yang tiga itu adalah ayat yang jelas, sunnah Nabi, dan Faroidh yang adil” [Abu Daud dan Ibnu Majah]

Dari Abu Hurairah bahwa Rasulullah SAW bersabda: ”Pelajarilah Faroidh dan ajarkanlah kepada manusia. Karena Faroidh adalah separuh dari ilmu dan akan dilupakan. Faroidhlah ilmu yang pertama kali dicabut dari ummatku” [Ibnu Majah dan Daruquthni]

Dalil Faroidh di surat An Nisaa’:

”Allah mensyari’atkan bagimu tentang (pembagian pusaka untuk) anak-anakmu. Yaitu : bahagian seorang anak lelaki sama dengan bagahian dua orang anak perempuan; dan jika anak itu semuanya perempuan lebih dari dua, maka bagi mereka dua pertiga dari harta yang ditinggalkan; jika anak perempuan itu seorang saja, maka ia memperoleh separo harta. Dan untuk dua orang ibu-bapa, bagi masing-masingnya seperenam dari harta yang ditinggalkan, jika yang meninggal itu mempunyai anak; jika orang yang meninggal tidak mempunyai anak dan ia diwarisi oleh ibu-bapanya (saja), maka ibunya mendapat sepertiga; jika yang meninggal itu mempunyai beberapa saudara, maka ibunya mendapat seperenam. (Pembagian-pembagian tersebut di atas) sesudah dipenuhi wasiat yang ia buat atau (dan) sesudah dibayar hutangnya. (Tentang) orang tuamu dan anak-anakmu, kamu tidak mengetahui siapa di antara mereka yang lebih dekat (banyak) manfaatnya bagimu. Ini adalah ketetapan dari Allah. Sesungguhnya Allah Maha Mengetahui lagi Maha Bijaksana.

Dan bagimu (suami-suami) seperdua dari harta yang ditinggalkan oleh isteri-isterimu, jika mereka tidak mempunyai anak. Jika isteri-isterimu itu mempunyai anak, maka kamu mendapat seperempat dari harta yang ditinggalkannya sesudah dipenuhi wasiat yang mereka buat atau (dan) seduah dibayar hutangnya. Para isteri memperoleh seperempat harta yang kamu tinggalkan jika kamu tidak mempunyai anak. Jika kamu mempunyai anak, maka para isteri memperoleh seperdelapan dari harta yang kamu tinggalkan sesudah dipenuhi wasiat yang kamu buat atau (dan) sesudah dibayar hutang-hutangmu. Jika seseorang mati, baik laki-laki maupun perempuan yang tidak meninggalkan ayah dan tidak meninggalkan anak, tetapi mempunyai seorang saudara laki-laki (seibu saja) atau seorang saudara perempuan (seibu saja), maka bagi masing-masing dari kedua jenis saudara itu seperenam harta. Tetapi jika saudara-saudara seibu itu lebih dari seorang, maka mereka bersekutu dalam yang sepertiga itu, sesudah dipenuhi wasiat yang dibuat olehnya atau sesudah dibayar hutangnya dengan tidak memberi mudharat (kepada ahli waris). (Allah menetapkan yang demikian itu sebagai) syari’at yang benar-benar dari Allah, dan Allah Maha Mengetahui lagi Maha Penyantun.

(Hukum-hukum tersebut) itu adalah ketentuan-ketentuan dari Allah. Barangsiapa taat kepada Allah dan Rasul-Nya, niscaya Allah memasukkannya kedalam syurga yang mengalir didalamnya sungai-sungai, sedang mereka kekal di dalamnya; dan itulah kemenangan yang besar.

Dan barangsiapa yang mendurhakai Allah dan Rasul-Nya dan melanggar ketentuan-ketentuan-Nya, niscaya Allah memasukkannya ke dalam api neraka sedang ia kekal di dalamnya; dan baginya siksa yang menghinakan.” [An Nisaa’:11-14]
